Book publication : Lebanon, a phoenix facing the challenge of the international geopolitical chessboard  (1950-2008). by Kazem KHALIFÉ

The position of Lebanon has always been a preponderant one within the Middle East, because of its human wealth and the privileged links it has always had with the West. A Micro-state of 10,452 square kilometres, a refuge mountain, a “message country” (Jean Paul II), it has for a long time been the only parliamentary  democracy in the Arab Orient. Lebanon has known an undisputed prosperity thanks to its dynamism and the genius of its people. In this respect, a local saying reminds us that “When a Lebanese falls into the sea, he comes out with a fish in his mouth”. Its capital, which had been a symbol of Paradise in the East until 1975, is henceforth mentioned to describe the war hell.

« That is Beyruth ! », still « this city which has died a thousand times and has risen again a thousand times » (Nadia Tuéni), everlasting like a phoenix rising up from the ashes. This publication hopes to offer a reading grid on one of the most complex issues (cold war, Arab-Israeli wars, the project for a Great Middle East, democratization studies, nation and state-building, the culture of a buffer state, resolutions 194, 242, 1559, 1701, etc.), in order to better understand  the cedar wood  chessboard. Actually, the “neither East nor West” motto of the 1943 National Pact has today given way to the “no United States, no Iran” one. However, can we say that the equation has been resolved?  Who are the actors? Kazem Khalifé examines the geopolitical, national, and international context and provides a study of the political development of Lebanon, to test the internal-external link, and proposes a unique analysis of foreign diplomacy and policy. At a time when tensions and passions are more than ever  exacerbated,  the author  offers a moderate and deep approach of the Lebanese issue.

Born in Jenine, Lebanon in 1978, Kazem Khalifé has both Lebanese and French nationalities. He was trained as an international jurist at the University of Toulouse I and has a Ph. D. in Political Science from Sciences Po of Toulouse University.  He is a researcher at the Morris Janowitz Center and works as an expert and consultant  for  a number  of international organizations. As a specialist of the Middle East, more specifically of Lebanon, he has often participated in international conferences on the foreign policies of Arab countries, the Lebanese crisis and the relationships between the United States and the Arab world. He has also carried a number of missions as an expert for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
